Profile:

Prof. Charles Tortoe is a Chief Research Scientist and Ag Director at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research-Food Research Institute and Associate Professor of the CSIR-College of Science and Technology affiliated to the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. He completed his Ph.D (Food Science) at the University of Greenwich, United Kingdom. He obtained MPhil and BSc (Hons) in Botany (Microbiology), respectively from the University of Ghana, Legon-Accra. Charles also holds Certificates in Post-harvest Technology, Food Packaging, Product Development and Marketing, Quality and Food Safety Management in Food Industry, Agri-business Development and Food Supply Chain Management from the Wageningen University in the Netherlands, a Certificate in Biosafety Assessment and Regulation of Agricultural Biotechnology from the Institute for Plant Biotechnology for Developing Countries, Ghent University, Belgium. He is Accredited Technical and Service provided for Grants Proposal Writing, Scientific Writing, Communication and Presentation by AuthorAiD (UK) and the Millennium Development Authority (MIDA) of the Millennium Challenge Account (USA). He is a Certified Champion for Change in Scaling-up Food Security in Africa by US Agency for International Development. In addition, he holds several certificates on Leadership, Management, and Mentorship from GIMPA and MDPI.

He has worked on several projects including World Bank/GoG West Africa Productivity Programme (WAAPP-2A), DFID/Street Foods Project, WFP Process for Progress (P4Ps) Programme, EU/Cassava SME Project, Waapp Yam Project, Millennium Development Authority (MIDA) of the Millennium Challenge Account, Cassava: Adding Value for Africa Project (C:AVA), csir-fri/tno-Netherlands project, GIZ German Government Project, EU Gratitude Project and Mitsubishi Research Institute Yam Project. His work involves food processing and preservation of root and tuber, fruits and vegetables and cereals and legumes crops. Others works are on value added products, food security, food safety and quality control, HACCP, value chain analysis, training, development and promoting farmers, processors, Micro-Small-Medium Scale and Large Scale Enterprises.

He is an external examiner and supervisor of MSc and PhD students from Department of Food Science and Technology from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), an internal examiner for Department of Agro-processing Technology and Food Biosciences of the CSIR-College of Science and Technology affiliated to the University of Cape Coast. He is an official mentor of AWARD, CSIR-Mentorship and UN-Women in Leadership Positions, Kenya and also official Trainer of AuthorAID (UK) for Scientific Writing and Grant Proposal Writing.

He is a member of several professional bodies and has authored and co-authored more than 315 Scientific and Technical publications with 7-Registered Copyrights. He is a reviewer for Frances Taylor, Elsevier, Springer, Wiley Publishers and journals including International Journal of Food Science and Technology, Journal of Food Quality, Journal of Food Engineering, LWT-Food Science and Technology and others.
