The Department of Plant Resources Department is located at the Fumesua station of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Kumasi Campus of the College. The Department is currently running an MPhil in Plant Breeding and Biotechnology programme and it is in the process of developing other programmes like MPhil Agronomy and Crop Physiology and MPhil in Plant Health and doctoral programmes.
The Department is being hosted by the Crops Research Institute. This institute has benefited from a World Bank Facility through the WAAPP which has enabled it build a state-of-the-art Research Facility. The Institute is also the National Centre of Specialization for Root and Tubers which is being upgraded to regional centre of excellence. The Department has the capacity to train large number of Plant Breeders and Biotechnologists to the highest level. Furthermore, it has access to the institute’s irrigation facilities for field work, screening houses for controlled experiments and research sub stations in the various agro ecological zones in Ghana for multi locational trials. This in addition to the rich human resource gives the Department significant advantage over other institutions who may be running similar programmes.
The Department has also developed modules to run short courses. The courses have been designed to give in-depth knowledge in modern trends in agriculture and also hands on training in good agricultural practices for our target audience. The target audience for these courses includes Scientists and Technicians in the West African sub-region, University students, Mid-career professionals in Universities and Research Institutes, Senior High School and Agricultural College teachers, Agricultural Extension Agents of MoFA and NGOs, Commercial farmers and Farmer Based Organizations, Agrochemical dealers and Project Officers of financial institutions.
